Which lenses are compatible with the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV?
It uses the Canon EF mount and accepts all EF optics, including alternatives from Sigma, Tamron, and others in EF mount. Keep in mind the 1.3x crop factor: a 50 mm behaves like a ~65 mm. It does not mount EF-S lenses (those for cropped APS-C). You can see our selection of Canon EF mount lenses.
What battery does it use and how much autonomy does it have?
It uses the battery Canon LP-E4 (lithium-ion) with LC-E4 charger. CIPA autonomy is around 1,500 shots per charge at standard temperature, dropping to about 270 in Live View or video mode. Note: the LP-E4 is discontinued, so used originals are often aged and it is advisable to check that they hold charge well.
Is it good for recording video?
It records Full HD 1080p at 30/25/24 fps and 720p at 60/50 fps, with a 3.5 mm microphone input. It was the only APS-H 1D with video, but it is primitive video: no reliable continuous AF, somewhat cumbersome manual exposure, old codec, and a clip limit of 29 min 59 s or 4 GB (about 12 minutes in practice). It is fine for occasional shots, not for modern production.
Is it good for starting in photography?
It is not the most recommended option for beginners. It is a large and heavy professional body (~1,180 g body only), with dense menus and without modern conveniences (touchscreen, IBIS, WiFi). It shines in the hands of those seeking speed and robustness for action; if you are starting out, a lighter and more current camera will be easier for you to handle.
Is it reliable to buy one second-hand?
Yes, it is a very robust body with a shutter tested to 300,000 actuations. An important note: the famous sub-mirror AF problem was with the 1D Mark III, not the Mark IV. Even so, it is advisable to verify focusing at the time of purchase with a fast lens (f/2.8) on a moving subject.
What should I check before buying it?
Ask for the shutter count (an ex-press unit may accumulate hundreds of thousands), check that the firmware is on the latest version (1.1.4), inspect the condition of the sealing and battery contacts, verify sensor cleanliness and the absence of dead pixels, and confirm that it includes an original LP-E4 battery and LC-E4 charger, since replacements are expensive and scarce.
What does the 1.3x crop factor mean?
The APS-H sensor is somewhat smaller than a full-frame, so it multiplies the focal length by 1.3x: a 24 mm acts like ~31 mm and a 300 mm like ~390 mm. This is an advantage for sports and wildlife because it extends the reach of telephoto lenses, but it penalizes true wide-angle. It is an "orphan" format without dedicated optics.
