Its great strength is fitting a Four Thirds sensor (17.3 × 13 mm) —the same physical format as Micro Four Thirds— into a pocket-sized body with a fixed lens. The result is image quality and low-light performance far above small-sensor compacts, with real background blur thanks to its Leica DC Vario-Summilux 24–75 mm equiv. f/1.7–2.8 lens.
It is aimed at the advanced enthusiast photographer or the professional who wants a camera to always carry, without hauling lenses, but without giving up manual control. And that's where it stands out: physical aperture, shutter speed and exposure compensation dials, plus a focus ring, offer a much-appreciated analog experience. Add a built-in EVF and 4K video, uncommon in 2014.
It's worth knowing that, due to the multi-aspect design, despite the large sensor only ~12.8 effective MP are used, and that the screen is fixed, not touchscreen. It also lacks optical stabilization for stills (only electronic stabilization in video), so in low light it's best to rely on its bright lens. Can I change the lens or attach a telephoto lens?
No. The LX100 has a fixed lens: the Leica 24–75 mm equiv. lens is built in and does not accept interchangeable lenses. If you need more reach than that 3.1x zoom, this isn't your camera.
Is it suitable for beginners?
It can be used in automatic modes, but its appeal is the physical manual controls. It's more oriented toward advanced enthusiasts or professionals looking for a second compact camera. A beginner who just wants to point and shoot will only get half the use out of it.
How is the battery life?
Modest: about 300 CIPA shots with the DMW-BLG10 battery, and it drops somewhat when using the viewfinder continuously. For a full day it's best to carry 1 or 2 spare batteries.
Does it really record 4K video?
Yes, 4K UHD (3840×2160) at 30p and 24p, something unusual in a 2014 compact, plus Full HD 1080p at 60p. It includes 4K Photo to extract ~8 MP frames. That said, the screen is fixed and not touchscreen, not very convenient for vlogging.
Is it reliable to buy second-hand? What should I check?
It's a solid model, but its best-known complaint is dust entering the sensor/retractable lens, visible as spots when stopping down the aperture (f/8–f/11). Ask for test photos of a uniform sky or wall at f/8. Also check that the zoom extends and retracts without noise and that the dials turn firmly.
What accessories are usually missing from used units?
The LX100 has no built-in flash: it came with a small external hot-shoe flash that is easily lost. It's also worth confirming that the lens cap (it's placed by hand) and the original charger and battery are included.
How does it differ from the LX100 II?
The LX100 II (2018) goes up to 17 effective MP, adds a touchscreen and mitigates the dust problem by design. If the price difference is small, the II is worth it; if you're looking for the best value in physical controls and Leica optics, the original LX100 is still a great option.
